Abstract
1,132,271. Internal resistance heating. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). 31 Jan., 1966 [8 Feb., 1965], No. 4236/66. Heading H5H. In a method of melting uranium and plutonium dioxide powders in a crucible a current path is provided through the powder of greater conductivity than that of the powder and heating current is first passed through the path to heat the powder surrounding the path and then heating current is passed through the heated powder. The melting apparatus comprises a water-cooled Cu crucible 2 having a graphite lining 3 and closed at the top by a vacuumtight housing 1. A graphite electrode 5 is mounted on a water-cooled Cu tube 4 slidable in the housing. A column 6 forming the path is placed between electrode 5 and the bottom of the crucible which is filled with powder 7 to be melted. The column may comprise compressed powder bodies, granulated residue of preceding melts or a graphite or tungsten rod, the rod being withdrawn after initial heating. A.C. or D.C. may be used and heating may be in a hydrogen atmosphere to produce a stoichiometric melt.
