A dental appliance comprises artificial teeth 26a secured to a lingual member 30 which is shaped to fit behind remaining abutment teeth and is able to be held to the abutment teeth by a labial bar 40 which is pivoted to the member 30 by a hinge 45 and can be secured to the member 30 by a catch 50, 71. The appliance is formed by making a wax mock-up (Figure 3, not shown) including a preformed metal hinge part (Figure 4, not shown) and catch part (Figure 5, not shown), the lingual member 30 and labial bar 40 being shaped in wax about the metal parts on a model of the patient's mouth and then a mould made from the mock-up is used to cast in metal the dental appliance itself. The hinge and catch parts are initially provided with removable handling members (49a, 49b, 58a, 58b, Figures 1 and 2, not shown) and a special jig (60, Figure 3, not shown) is used to align the parts in the mock-up. The hinge part is provided with formations (46a, 46c) to aid in keying the part to the member 30. Alternative hinge and catch parts are illustrated in Figures 17 and 27 (not shown), the hinge part being provided with a separate handling member (Figure 20, not shown). These alternative hinge and catch parts may be provided in a plastics material as patterns which are used to ,make a mould from which the actual metal parts are cast. As shown, the lingual member 30 is connected to two side parts in the form of cast metal skeletons (Figure 3, not shown) and the lingual member, the two skeletons, and the labial bar 40 are covered with plastics material 85, 86, 90 to imitate gum tissue and with further artificial teeth 88, 89.
