Abstract

1,131,538. Measuring speed. ROLLS - ROYCE Ltd. July 20,1967, No.33382/67. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G4] An arrangement for measuring the time taken for the speed of an engine shaft 10 to change from one value to another comprises means for generating pulses having a frequency dependent on the speed of the shaft, means for measuring the interval between consecutive pulses, means providing a first signal when the first speed has been reached and means for providing a second signal when the second speed has been reached and means measuring the time between these signals. The pulses may be generated by an apertured disc 16 and photo-cell 24 or by a magnetic arrangement. Alternate pulses set and reset flip-flop 40 the output of which is therefore a series of pulses each of which represents by its length the time between a consecutive pair of pulses. The pulses are applied to gate 50 to let 1Mc/s pulses pass to four-decade counter 64. The output of the four-decade stages are applied to number recognisers 82, 88 representing the higher speed and the lower speed respectively. As the shaft accelerates the unit 88 responds at the lower speed and sets flip-flop 96. When the higher speed is reached the unit 82 responds and the flip-flop 96 is reset. Gate 100, opened by the set output of flip-flop 96 passes 1Kc/s pulses to counter 110 which indicates in milliseconds the time taken to accelerate from the lower to the upper speed. Counters 64 and 110, and the digital units 82, 88 may be replaced by analogue circuits Specification 1, 096, 449 is referred to.
