In a machine for testing oil, a shaft 2 is rotated in an oil bath, and simultaneously a pressure member 3 bears against the drum with increasing pressure until the pressure member 3 seizes against the shaft 2, this pressure being indicated and/or recorded. The increasing pressure is applied by a double hydraulic piston system 11, 12 coupled through a pivoted arm 5 to the pressure member.
