Abstract

A crusher for metallic chips comprises reciprocable feed pushers 3, Fig. 1, to push chippings from a feed hopper 1 to a rotor 8 having hammers 7 cooperating with a breaking head 6. Each hammer is disc-shaped with peripheral teeth d and a shaped bore with recesses a, and is mounted on a shaft so that the centre of gravity of each hammer performs an orbital movement round the axis of the shaft on which it is mounted as the rotor rotates. End discs 22, Fig. 3, on the rotor prevent metallic chips from passing axially of the rotor shaft to the rotor bearings. A resiliently-supported grid 14 extends around the lower area of the rotor. Clogging at the rear of the pushers is prevented by members 9. The main rotor shaft is mounted on spring-loaded bearings which accommodate dimensional changes due to changes of temperature.
