Abstract
1,130,345. Anti-coagulant surfaces. INCENTIVE, A.B. 2 Dec., 1965 [17 Dec., 1964; 11 June, 1965], No. 51280/65. Heading B2K. A method for rendering the surface capable of retarding or preventing the coagulation of blood in contact therewith, comprises securing heparin, as anti-coagulant, to the surface by means of a cationic surface-active agent. The surface may first be treated at an elevated temperature, for example 100 to 200‹C. and subsequently treated with a solution of the anti-coagulant. Alternatively, the anti-coagulant and the surface-active agent may be reacted to form a complex and the surface then treated with the complex. The surface-active agent may be a long-chain aliphatic amine, for example, cetyl amine or cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. The surface to be treated may be of metal, glass, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene or polytetrafluoroethylene. Glass and metal surfaces may be first coated with a plastics layer.
