Abstract

1,130,090. Stoppering. ANCHOR HOCKING GLASS CORP. 13 Sept., 1966 [12 Oct., 1965], No. 40836/66. Heading B8T. A stoppering machine for applying caps 7 fed down as hoot 9 to bottles &c. 2 has a guide shoe 3 engaged by the caps and including a vacuum holding area 18 which keeps the caps level at the beginning of the application process. The vacuum holding area 18 is formed by holes 19 in the lower face of the shoe 3, which is hollow and is connected through a flexible pipe 24 to a Venturi pump 25. A hood 6 into which the bottles &c. 2 are passed is fed with steam through a pipe to which the Venturi pump 25 is joined. Thus a vacuum is produced within the hollow shoe 3, and the caps 7 are held against the underface of the shoe. The steam in the hood 6 replaces the air in the tops of the bottles &c. 2, so that when the caps 7 are secured in position, a vacuum develops within the bottles &c. as they cool. As shown, the bottles &c. 2 have threaded necks 21, and the caps 7 are screwed on to the necks by their engagement with two powered belts 22, one on each side of the caps (7), Fig. 2 (not shown). In a modification, two Venturi pumps (38), Fig. 5 (not shown), are operated by a single steam source, and are individually connected by flexible pipes (37) to two holes (36), Fig. 6 (not shown), in the lower face of a guide shoe (34). As a further modification, the two powered belts 22, Fig. 1, on opposite sides of the caps 7, may be replaced by a moving belt (41), Fig. 9 (not shown), on one side of the caps (7) and a lowfriction fixed rail (42) on the other side. In a further modification, the caps (7), Fig. 10 (not shown), are instead screwed home by sliding under a guide shoe (46) spring-biased downwardly and having on its lower face a low-friction guide rail (45) and a rubber &c. insert (44).
