Abstract

1,129,712. Intra-uterine devices. B. P. APPLEBY. 8 June, 1967 [4 July, 1966], No. 30014/66. Heading A5R. An intra-uterine device of resiliently flexible material comprises a single closed loop carrying a plurality of filaments which fan out to spread over the lining of the uterus when the device has been inserted. As shown, the closed loop 1 is of polyethylene or polypropylene material and is elliptical with a semi-circular cross-section. The rectilinear filaments 2 are arranged in a conical formation and may be of differing lengths and of nylon material moulded to the loop. A tail 3 is of nylon, silk, or cotton, and is moulded with the loop or is tied through a suitable hole in the loop. The device may contain barium for X-ray analysis and may be provided in a sterilized pack which also contains an introducer tube, gloves, and a speculum. An alternative embodiment (Figures 6-10, not shown) has two filaments curved so as to partly encircle the loop.
