Heading E2S A watertight sliding clasp fastener includes two stringer tapes 1 each having a row of fastener members 2 formed from a single filament, the fastener being made water tight by the provision of elastomeric material e.g. of thermoplastic synthetic resin which defines pockets 5 for sealingly receiving the coupling heads 4 of the fastener members. In the construction shown-in Figs. I and 2 the filament from which each row is formed is helicoidally coiled to produce the fastener members and each row is sewn by rows of stitches 6 to the stringer tape; the elastomeric material is in the form of strands 3 one strand being inserted within each row of members, the pockets 5 being of saucer-like form and disposed between adjacent members. The rows are connected at their ends by cross pieces 7 and at the end portion of the fastener at which the slider is located when the fastener is closed an under flap 9 is provided which shields the other side of the slider to render it water tight. The two stringer tapes are also interconnected by a rigid plate 10 which is positioned underneath the flap 9. The holes produced by the stitching in the stringer tapes are filled with elastomeric material to make them water tight by dipping the tapes in the material or painting them with it. In a second embodiment Fig. 5 the fastener is produced by coupling the two stringers by interlocking the coupling heads together and the coupled stringers are covered with the elastomeric material by an extrusion process the two stringers being subsequently separated, after which the elastomeric material is rolled to form sealing portions 12 above and below the coupling heads.
