Abstract

1,128,912. Filtering system. SERCK R. & D. Ltd. 27 Jan., 1966 [3 Feb., 1965], No. 4655/65. Heading B1D. In a filtering system in which a bistable switching device 5, 11 automatically directs fluid alternately to each of two passages containing filter elements 3, 4 while causing backwashing of the element not on forward flow, the passages 1,2 form opposite sides of a central chamber 7 which communicates by apertures 9, 10 with passages 1, 2 upstream of elements 3, 4. The converging inlet 11 and subsequent divergence of the passages forms a bistable coanda, which switches the flow when blockage of one element alters the pressure distribution sufficiently. The backwashing stream through one element passes through chamber 7 where baffle 8 retains the solids. In Fig. 1 elements 3, 4 are separate and passages 1, 2 enclose the spherical or cylindrical chamber 7. In Fig. 2, not shown, the filter elements are different parts of a cylindrical element (12) located at the downstream junction of passages 1, 2, and flow is inwards through element (12) then out at its upper end.
