Abstract

1,128,583. Automatic exchange systems. SIEMENS A.G. 3 May, 1967 [4 May, 1966], No. 20513/67. Addition to 1, 092, 599. Heading H4K. In a switching matrix comprising a plurality of bi-stable, single winding relays which each have one end of their windings connected to an associated column conductor and their other ends connected via oppositely poled rectifiers to a pair of associated row conductors, at least one of each pair of row conductors includes a voltage threshold device. The device may be a Zener diode or a current-direction independent varistor. In Fig. 1, selective operation of e.g. relay A22 is effected by closing switches Y2 and X2 when these are connected respectively to + and -, U. In order to release A22, the same switches are operated but in this case they must be connected to - and +, U. Operation of more than one relay at a time is prevented by choosing U such that it is greater than the breakdown voltage Uz of a single Zener diode but is less than 3Uz (the latter criterion is obtained by determining the number of Zener diodes which will be encountered in the shortest path parallel to the wanted path). In Fig. 2, operation or release of a relay is effected by closing a selected X and Y switch and by connecting the common Y conductor to +Uan or -Uab respectively. Assuming the thresholds of varistors V and Zener diode Z are all equal to Uz then 2Uz > Uan = Uab > Uz. If Zener diode Z is omitted, then 2Uz > Uab > Uz > Uan.
