1,128,144. Continuous casting mould; welding by pressure; making composite metal plates and moulds. CENTRALNY NAUCHNO ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT TCHORNOY METALLOURGIY " I.P. BARDINE." 26 July, 1966 [15 April, 1966], No. 33478/66. Headings B3A, B3F and B3R. The walls of a continuous casting mould comprise bi-metallic plates formed by explosively bonding a copper plate 3 on to a steel plate 1, the latter plate having grooves 2 for forming, with the bonded copper plate 3, cooling conduits. The grooves 2 are filled prior to bonding with a low melting point body, e.g. lead, which is melted out after bonding. An explosive charge 4 is placed on the copper plate 3 and the said plate is preferably arranged at an angle to the steel plate 1 prior to igniting the explosives. Moulds constructed from the bi-metallic plates may be repaired by locally machining away a layer of the copper plate and explosively bonding an additional copper plate to the existing copper plate.
