Abstract
1,127,600. Laminates. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 Dec., 1966 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 55078/65. Heading B5N. A laminated building element comprises a layer of foamed rigid polyurethane or a rigid foamed cyclic ether bonded to a layer of a polyolefin-coated facing material by in situ reaction and foaming of a mixture of foamforming chemicals on the polyolefin-coated surface of the layer of facing material. Preferably, the laminate comprises a core of the foamed material sandwiched between two polyolefin-coated layers of facing material. The polyolefin, which is e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, may be a matt polyolefin which has been subjected to an adhesion-improving surface treatment, e.g. a corona-discharge or ozone treatment. The coated layer(s) of facing material, which when two are present may be the same or different, may be flexible, e.g. paper, paper-board, metal sheet or foil, asbestos paper or sheet, or rubber; or semi-rigid, e.g. resin-bonded glass fibre; or rigid, e.g. wood, plywood, plasterboard, asbestos cement sheets, hardboard or fibreboard. Other examples given are paper-covered plasterboard, multiply paper board, kraft paper, and " semichemical fluting." The polyolefin coating may be applied to one or both surfaces of the facing layers by extrusion coating, or by pressure moulding. The laminates may be produced continuously or batchwise in which latter case the foam is generated in situ between two layers of facing material in a suitable press. Bonding may be effected by the heat produced in the foam-forming reaction, or further heat may be applied. The laminates may be used as building boards.
