Abstract
1,127,590. Homopolymerization of α-olefins. INTERNATIONAL SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO. Ltd. 8 Sept., 1967, No. 41144/67. Addition to 1,077,397. Heading C3P. α-Olefins are homopolymerized by contact with a catalyst system comprising (a) an organic compound of vanadium, titanium or zirconium, not containing a halogen atom bonded directly to the metal atom, (b) an aluminium trihalide or dihalohydride and (c) an alkyl, aryl or alkylaryl organo-metallic compound of lithium, (c) only being contacted with (b) in the presence of (a) or the α-olefin monomer. The preferred temperature range is - 10‹ to + 50‹ C. In the examples, the following α-olefines are polymerized:-ethylene, propylene, butene-1, heptene-1, 4-methyl-pentene-1, in a hexane solution under a nitrogen atmosphere, the catalyst system being (a) vanadyl tri-n-butoxide or titanium tetra-n-butoxide or zirconium tetra-n-butoxide or tetra-n-butyl titanate, (b) aluminium bromide or chloride and (c) lithium butyl.
