Abstract
A coloured transparent or opaque low-expansion crystallized glass-ceramic formed by in situ crystallization of a coloured base glass to yield crystals of less than 1/3 micron of beta-eucryptite and/or beta-spodumene has a colour which is different from that of the base glass from which it is formed. The glasses used consist essentially of in percentage by weight:-SiO2 50-75; Al2O3 16-35; Li2O 3-5.5; B2O3 0-9; ZrO2 0-5; TiO2 0-10; SnO2 0-5; P2O5 0-3; F2 0-0.2; Alkaline earth oxides 0-4.5; ZnO 0-4; Na2O 0-2; colourant 0.005-2 with the following limitations (SiO2 + Al2O3) 75-92; (ZrO2 + TiO2 + SnO2) not over 10. Colourants used are NiO or NiO with Fe2O3, MnO or CoO; CoO or CoO with Cr2O3, Fe2O3, MnO, CuO or S=; S= particularly in the form ZnS; S= with V2O5; Fe2O3; MnO; Cr2O3; V2O5. Examples given with large variations of colouring.
