A consumable electrode electric arc furnace comprises a raisable head having an electrically conductive water cooled ram and a crucible below the head defining a melting chamber and a hollow conduit, supporting the head, through which the atmosphere in the chamber is controlled. The apparatus is identical with that described in Specification 1,094,749.
