Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus for two-stage nitration of aromatic hydrocarbons with a plurality of nitration vessels, a discharge container for each starting material for each degree of conversion of the nitration mixture, and a washing device, wherein the two stages are adapted for parallel operation when the apparatus is used to produce a mononitro-compound and for series operation when it is used to produce a dinitro-compound. The stated purpose of the invention is to permit (a) an interchange between mono- and di-nitration processes, and (b) the use of the total capacity of the apparatus when used in a mononitration process. The nitration of toluene is exemplified, but the apparatus may also be used for the nitration of, e.g., xylene or chlorobenzene.
