Abstract
The method claimed in Specification 948,301 is modified in that the heating of the glass in vacuo is carried out in contact with an allotropic form of carbon introduced into the glass. The carbon may be powdered or solid carbon or graphite and may be in the form of a disc, rod or plate introduced into the melt. The powdered form may be mixed with the batch or in the melt. Suitable amounts of each form are given. The purified glass may be moulded into very thin lenses by pouring into a mould part and immediately pressing by a second mould part for between 10 and 30 seconds, the moulds being of graphite, polished to give a smooth glass surface. Suggested mixtures are CaCo3 to Al2O3 in ratios 1 : 1 to 1 : 3 with SiO2 6-8%; MgO 4-7% or in ratios 1 : 1 to 1 : 4 with BaCO3 5-10%; MgO 1-10% by weight.
