Abstract

1,121,855. Shaft couplings. SIMMS MOTOR UNITS Ltd. 3 Nov., 1965 [9 Nov., 1964], No. 45553/64. Heading F2U. Driving and driven shafts 13, 14 are circumferentially adjustably connected by a hollow transmission shaft 19 having helically splined engagement of opposite hand therewith. Play in the spline connections is taken up by a prestressed torsion bar 24 having toothed engagement with rings 27, 29 which engage the helical splines of the driving and driven shafts. The torsion bar 24 together with its rings and the transmission shaft 19 are urged leftwards by a spring 32 and are adjusted to the right, to determine the angular adjustment of the shafts 13, 14, by a piston 35 subject to input speed responsive hydraulic pressure. The shaft 14 may drive a fuel injection pump, the arrangement providing automatic advance of the fuel injection timing in dependence upon the engine speed.
