Abstract
1,121,766. Train braking system. KNORRBREMSE G.m.b.H. 8 Sept., 1966 [16 Nov., 1965], No. 40262/66. Heading F2F. In a vacuum controlled, air pressure operated braking system for rail vehicles, a control valve 5 is provided which is arranged to govern the compressed air loading of a brake cylinder and is controlled by a piston system providing piston surfaces arranged to be loaded by the pressure in the brake cylinder 26 and by the vacuum in the train pipe 1 against the vacuum in the vacuum reservoir 16 and a piston surface 12 arranged to be loaded by the vacuum in a control chamber 11 in the same direction as the loading of the piston surface by the train pipe vacuum, the control chamber being connected through an adjustable non-return valve 3 to the brake pipe, the brake pipe being connected by a return valve 6 to the control chamber and through a second adjustable non-return valve 3<SP>1</SP> to the vacuum reservoir 16. In the embodiment particularly described, the valve has three pistons 12, 14 and 19, but the pistons 12 and 19 may be combined to form a single piston. When the vacuum in train pipe 1 is decreased, valve part 18 moves upwards to close passage 17 and open valve 20, compressed air then flowing from reservoir 22 to chamber 24, to reset valve 20, and to the brake actuator cylinder 26. The adjustable valves 3, 3<SP>1</SP> permit the sensitivity and the maximum braking pressure of the system to be adjusted. To commence the braking operation the air flowing from pipe 1 into chamber 4, when the brake pipe vacuum is reduced, has to overcome the force applied by the degree of vacuum in chamber 11; this latter force may be varied by adjusting valve 3 to control the sensitivity of valve 5. The maximum braking pressure occurs when the pressure in the brake pipe is atmospheric. The pressure in cylinder 26 and in the valve re-setting chamber will then depend only on the degree of vacuum in reservoir 16 and compartment 2; this degree can be selected by adjusting valve 3<SP>1</SP> which controls flow from the reservoir to the evacuated train pipe.
