Abstract

<PICT:1121548/C6-C7/1> Metal e.g. steel wire 1 is continuously heat-treated and hot-dip metallized by first heating it in a reducing gas, such as hydrogen from cracked ammonia to at least 700 DEG C. to clean it, passing it through a molten lead bath 10, containing a percentage of zinc higher than 0.3 and below the solubility limit (4%) of zinc in lead, to emerge into air covered with a sheath of lead, and then passing the wire through a molten metal bath 13 in a separate tank to strip the wire of its lead sheath and subsequently cover it with a layer of the molten metal, such as zinc or aluminium. The reducing gas is preferably circulated through a muffle 15 as shown by arrows 16, 17, one end of which is immersed in the lead bath 10. The wire may be heated by the Joule effect using another molten lead bath 9 through which the wire passes before entering the bath 10, lead baths being connected to an electrical supply 14 and the roller 4 guiding the wire between these baths being electrically insulated. Alternatively the wire may be heated by an electrically heated oven see Figs. 2 to 4, (not shown) or by means of liquid or gaseous fuel.
