Abstract
A curable composition comprises a silicone, polyacrylic, polyurethane and a polysulphide and a silane of the formula <FORM:1121026/C3/1> wherein R and R1 are hydrocarbon radicals free from aliphatic unsaturation, L is a radical attached to the Si atom via a silicon-carbon bond and contains at least two isocyanate groups and d has a value of 0 to 3. The most useful silanes are those of the formula (RO)3SiL. Suitable radicals R and R1 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl radicals, and R is preferably a C1- 3 alkyl radical and R1 a hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms. The examples describe a composition of a room temperature curing polyurethane and silanes of the formula <FORM:1121026/C3/2> <FORM:1121026/C3/3> The presence of the silanes in the composition serves to improve the adhesion of the curable polymer to a substrate (see Division B2).ALSO:The adhesion of silicones, polyacrylics, polyurethanes and polysulphides to various substrates may be improved by adding to the above curable polymers, or priming the surface of the substrate with, a silane of the formula: <FORM:1121026/B1-B2/1> wherein R and R1 are hydrocarbon radicals free from aliphatic unsaturation, L is a radical attached to the Si atom via a silicon-carbon bond and contains at least two isocyanate groups and d has a value of 0 to 3, applying the polymer or polymer composition to the substrate and finally curing the polymer. Suitable substrates are brick, concrete, glass, ceramic, porcelain, aluminium, tin, iron, magnesium, copper, steel, wood, paper, polystyrene, polyacrylates, alkyd resins, formaldehyde resins or cellulose acetate. Examples describe the bonding of (1) a room temperature curing polyurethane to glass using a silane of the formula: <FORM:1121026/B1-B2/2> as an internal and external primer and (2) a room temperature curing polyurethane to glass, aluminium and steel using a silane of the formula: <FORM:1121026/B1-B2/3> as an external primer. When used as an external primer the silane may be dissolved in a suitable solvent before applying to the surface of the substrate.
