Abstract

1,119,932. Winding and reeling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. 6 Oct., 1965 [27 Oct., 1964], No. 43852/64. Heading B3E. Apparatus for bending the leading end of strip to be coiled on a reel comprises a pair of rolls engaging one surface of the strip and rotated to have a peripheral speed equal to that of the strip and a third roll adapted to engage the other surface of the strip to lie in nested relation with the first two rolls, said third roll being carried by a member so as to be movable from a strip engaging position and being rotated at a peripheral speed greater than the speed of the strip so that once the leading end of the strip is fed between the rolls and a bending pressure is established to bend the leading end, the member and third roll will be automatically displaced out of the nested relationship. Strip S from a rolling mill is passed between rollers 19, 21, carried by an adjustably pivoted frame 26 and driven at the speed of the strip, and a roller 22, carried by an arm 35 pivoted at 36 and driven faster than the strip, to a reel on which it is wound with the aid of a belt wrapper. The roller 22 may be of a diameter larger than that of the rollers 19, 21 and driven at the same angular speed. As the strip end passes between the rollers the high speed of the roller 22 causes the arm 35 to pivot to carry the roller 22 away from the rollers 19, 21 in the direction from which the strip is fed. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the arm carrying the fast roller is moved in the direction of its length, against spring pressure, by the passage of the strips between the rollers so that the lower end of the arm engages a driven roller which assists the pivoting movement of the arm swinging the roller out of its bending position.
