[Also in Division E2] A plastic-coated, stranded-metal clothes line 1, fastened to a post 3 and to a wallmounted housing 5, is tensioned by a turnbuckle 4, or other tensioning means, articles to be dried being carried by clothes pegs 7 suspended from rings or bellmouthed tubular runners 6 of nylon which are slidable on the line and are interconnected by cords 8. A leading runner is connected by a cord 15 and clip 14 to an endless cord 10 which is moved by a pulley 12, driven by an electric motor in the housing 5, to spread the articles or withdraw them under a canopy 16. The motor is reversible and is controlled by a manual switch 13, biased to a central off position, or by a remote switch connected to the motor by a cable, a manually disengageable drive allowing manual actuation of the cord 10. In modifications, the motor is unidirectional, having alternative drive connections to the pulley and a neutral disconnected position, and a rainfallsensitive device having a relay operated by passage of a current between spaced conductors held in a web of insulating threads is provided to automatically bring the articles under the canopy. In further modifications the line and endless cord pass round pulleys diverting them from a straight line, or extending through a slot in a door for indoor loading, the clothes pegs are hinged to the runners or comprise spring steel members passed through the tube or ring, twisted therebelow, and provided with inturned ends which engage in the core space of a spring clothes peg.
