Abstract

Thermoplastic hot-melt adhesives comprise by weight 25 to 65 parts of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer containing 17 to 35 weight per cent of vinyl acetate, 30 to 65 parts of an aromatic hydrocarbon/aldehyde resin having a ring and ball-softening point of 70 DEG to 150 DEG C. and 5 to 30 parts of a crystalline wax having a melting-point of at least 150 DEG F. The resin may be prepared by condensing benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, diethylbenzenes, naphthalene, methylnaphthalenes, ethylnaphthalenes, tetralin or aromatic refinery streams with formaldehyde, formalin, paraformaldehyde, trioxymethylene, trioxane, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde or butyraldehyde in the presence of acidic catalysts, e.g. sulphuric, hydrofluoric, formic and phosphoric acids, boron trifluoride and metal chlorides, optionally modified with acetic acid. Specified waxes are paraffin, microcrystalline, Fischer-Tropsch, carnauba, montan, ouricury, shellac, sugar cane, raffia and esparto waxes, and long chain amines and ketones, e.g. diheneicosyl ketone and 18-pentatriacontanone. The compositions may be used for bonding wood, plastics, textiles and paper, e.g. in the manufacture of corrugated paper boards.ALSO:Thermoplastic hot melt adhesives comprise by weight 5 to 30 parts of a crystalline wax having a melting point of at least 150 DEG F., 25 to 65 parts of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer containing 17 to 35 weight per cent of vinyl acetate, and 30 to 65 parts of an aromatic hydrocarbon/aldehyde resin having a ring and ball softening point of 70 DEG to 150 DEG C. Specified waxes are paraffin, microcrystalline, Fischer-Tropsch, carnauba, montan, ouricury, shellac, sugar cane, raffia and esparto waxes, and long chain amines and ketones, e.g. diheneicosyl ketone and 18-pentatriacontanone. Examples describe paper laminating adhesives comprising ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers, aromatic hydrocarbon/formaldehyde resins and microcrystalline, paraffin, Fischer-Tropsch and carnauba waxes and the above ketones.
