Abstract

The invention comprises steroido-oxazolines having the formula <FORM:1119083/C2/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or a hydroxy or acyloxy group, R1 represents hydrogen, an alkyl group having up to eight carbon atoms or a phenyl group and X and Y each represent a halogen atom and a process for the production of a 9a , 11b -dihalo-[17a , 16a -d]-oxazoline steroid of the pregnane series which comprises halogenating a corresponding pregn- 9 (11)-ene-[17a , 16a -d] -oxazoline steroid to introduce halogen atoms at the 9a and 11b -positions. Hydroxylation in 21-position may be effected with iodine in the presence of calcium oxide followed by treatment with a carboxylic acid or a 21-bromo compound may be formed followed by treatment with an alkali metal acylate. Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-inflammatory activity comprise the above compounds with a pharmaceutical carrier.
