Abstract
Particles of foamed polystyrene are mixed with moulding sand to increase the gas permeability of moulds and cores when the polystyrene melts, burns or vaporizes at the hardening stage or because of the heat of the metal when it is poured into the mould. The inner layer forming the mould surface may contain a small amount of foamed polystyrene as small particles, but the outer layers may have greater quantities as larger particles.
