Abstract
Novel compounds having the formula <FORM:1118799/C2/1> in which R is a C1- 5 alkyl radical, A is -NO2 or NR4R5, where R4 is hydrogen, C1- 5 alkyl, C2- 6 alkanoyl or benzoyl and R5 is hydrogen or C1- 5 alkyl, and R3 is hydrogen or C2- 6 alkanoyl, and their non-toxic acid addition salts are obtained by reacting a 2-(C1- 5 alkoxy)-4-nitro-benzoi acid with a borohydride reducing agent in the presence of an aluminium halide to produc a 2-(C1- 5 alkoxy)-4-nitrobenzyl alcohol and if desired reacting the latter in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to produce a 2-(C1- 5 alkoxy)-4-aminobenzyl alcohol. The O-acyl and N-acyl derivatives of the 4-nitro- and 4-aminobenzyl alcohols are obtained by reaction with an appropriate acylating agent while the N-alkyl derivatives are obtained by alkylation.
