Abstract
1,118,794. Electric resistance heating. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 March, 1966 [17 March, 1965], No. 11400/65. Heading H5H. A probe for sensing air pressure comprises a tubular outer wall 16 formed of two coaxial metal shells 31, 32 and an electric heater 30 sandwiched between them wherein an outer metal sheath 33 of the heater is compressed between the shells in thermal contact with them both. In a pitot static probe clamped to the nose of an aircraft as described in Specification 1,118,793 (see Division G1), the sheath is brazed to stainless steel shells 31, 32 and then swaged to produce the required profile. The heater is wound as a double loop with both ends emerging at the aft end of the probe. A nose portion 15 is brazed to the wall 16 and includes another sheathed type heater 36 wound on a pipe 18 within a solid stainless steel profiled outer nose shell 37. The heater 36 extends aft loosely wound on a tube 22 conveying total pressure. The heaters 30, 36 consist of a Ni wire or strip 34 embedded in Mg oxide within the sheath 33.
