Abstract
1,118,750. Cavity wall reactors. H. F. A. TOPSOE. 1 Sept., 1965 [11 Sept., 1964], No. 37351/65. Heading B1F. A heterogeneous gas-phase catalytic reactor in which "channelling" of the catalyst bed by the gas stream is avoided, comprises a bed of catalytic material supported or confined on at least one surface by a hollow double-wall structure both of whose walls have openings or pores permitting the passage of gas, the openings in the wall furthest from the catalyst bed being such as to set up a pressure drop across that wall 0.1-2 times that across the catalyst bed. In Fig. 2, plate 9 containing passages 10 is separated by spacers 12 (which are gas tight) from plate 11 of porous material. Instead of a plate of 'porous material, solid plate (39) may be used (Fig. 5, not shown) in which a limited number of air passages (40) are provided. These may be further restricted by nozzles (42) (Fig. 6, not shown). Reactors with both vertical and radial gas flow are disclosed.
