Abstract

An article is electro-phoretically painted by applying thereto an undercoat to provide a conductive layer on the article and then a further coating by electro-phoretic deposition of a paint. For non-conductive articles, e.g. of plastic or glass, the undercoat may be applied by spraying. When the article possesses a conductive outer layer e.g. of iron the undercoat is preferably deposited electro-phoretically, being a waterthinnable paint comprising a conducting pigment, such as carbon, aluminium, silver or metallized plastic or pigment, and water-dispersible resin as binder, e.g. 5 to 20% of phenolic or melamine alkyd or vinyl-modified alkyd resin. To render the undercoat conducting, sufficient conductive pigment must be present e.g. 1 to 10%. The water-thinnable paint may contain 5 to 20% of the water-dispersible resin and additionally an alkaline material such as NaOH, NH3 or an amine e.g. tricthylamine to give it a pH of 7.25 to 9. The undercoat may be stoved prior to the further coating; both coatings may be polymerized.
