Abstract

1,118,504. Detecting inhomogeneities; measuring velocity. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 16, 1967, No.27782/67. Headings G1A and G1N. The velocity of a steel strip is measured by detecting variations in a surface property of the strip using two transducers spaced in the direction of travel of the strip and feeding the outputs of the transducers to a correlation detector, a time delay being included in the connection between one of the transducers and the correlation detector. Either the time delay or the spacing between the transducers is adjusted to bring the signals applied to the correlation detector into synchronism. The surface property may be reflectivity, in which case the transducers would be photodetectors arranged at locations within a uniformly illuminated portion of the strip. Alternatively, magnetic playback heads may be used to detect variations in magnetic properties. A magnetic drum recorder may be used as an adjustable time delay. The correlation detector may be a longtailed pair.
