Abstract
1,118,351. Gas-fueled lighters. MANSEI KOGYO K.K. 4 March, 1966 [5 March, 1965], No. 9491/66. Heading F4F. A fuel control valve in the reservoir 10, e.g. of steel, bronze or synthetic resin, of a liquefied gas-fueled lighter, comprises a cylindrical valve body 11 which projects through the upper and lower walls 10a, 10b of the reservoir and contains a porous mass 20, e.g. of rubber, resin sponge, leather or cloth, for converting the fuel from the liquid to a gaseous state which is sandwiched between sheets 17 and 18 of fine wire mesh or perforated metal. The sheet 17 is retained within a circular flange 19 of a member 15, having a valve opening 24, which is made to compress the mass 20 against the action of a spring 14 by a cylinder 13 screwthreaded into the valve body 11. Rotation of a serrated knob 12 which meshes with the cylinder 13 varies the compression of the mass 20. A longitudinally bored burner nozzle 27 retains at its lower end a plug 26, e.g. of synthetic rubber, which in the inoperative condition of the lighter seals in a conical portion 40 of member 15, thus closing valve opening 24. To operate the lighter a forked lever 28 lifts nozzle 27 against the action of a spring 27 and gas from mass 20 flows into the nozzle through lateral openings 27b, 27c to the outlet 27d. Liquid fuel enters the control valve through lateral openings 11f and 11g in body 11 and passes into an absorbing mass 31 retained in a member 30 before being distributed by sheet 18 into mass 20. The member 30 is screwthreaded into valve body 11 and can by rotation affect the compression of mass 20. O-ring seals 23, 33 and 35 prevent gas escaping to atmosphere. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the valve body comprises two screwthreaded parts 111, 112 and the members 13 and 15 are united into one piece 113. The valve body extends only through the upper wall of the reservoir eliminating member 30 so that absorbing mass 31<SP>1</SP> is retained by the valve body and is in direct contact with the liquefied fuel. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown), sheet 18 is replaced by a mass 114 of absorbing material squeezed within a cylinder 115 of soft synthetic resin or rubber.
