Abstract

1,117,852. Sawing. WEYERHAEUSER CO. 8 Feb., 1967 [23 Feb., 1966], No. 6071/67. Heading B5L. A band mill comprises a drive wheel 7 and non-rotating support means 15 mounted on a base and supporting a band saw 3, the support means having a low friction surface in sliding contact with the band saw. The drive wheel is mounted on a motor driven shaft 8 and the support means 15 is secured by a key 17 to a stationary shaft 16 carried by means for adjusting the tension of the band saw which is guided by back-up rollers 28. The support means 15 has an edge guide 18 for the band saw 3 and is covered by low-friction material, such as neoprene 38. A fluid, such as water, is supplied from a pipe 35, manifold 34 and pipes 31 to nozzles 32 which open into the space between the material 38 and band saw so that, in operation, the band saw is supported by a fluid film. In another embodiment, the support means is of D-shape instead of circular while in a further embodiment, the band saw 73, Fig. 7, is driven by a wheel 7 over upper and lower support means 76, 80 having low friction surfaces. Four arrangements as shown in Fig. 7 may be arranged for cutting a log.
