Abstract

1,117,762. Removing bark. H. T. JUHOLA. 27 April, 1965, No. 17769/65. Heading B5L. A machine for removing bark from logs comprises a rotatable cutting device 11, a transporting device 8 located adjacent the cutting device for moving a log towards the cutting device, and a feeding device 10 which is disposed above the transporting device and, in operation, is brought into contact with the log, the feeding device consisting of a steering knife having an edge which is arranged to push the log against, and to be movable in various directions relative to, the cutting device and the transporting device. The cutting device consists of a disc which has three blades 21, Fig. 2, and is mounted on a shaft 20 connected by a belt drive 9 to a shaft 18 adapted to be driven by the power shaft 32 of a tractor, the latter having lift arms connectible by pegs 38 to the frame 19 of the machine. The transporting device is coaxial with the cutting device and consists of a conical helically-threaded member 8 which when rotated carries a log supported thereby towards the cutting device, the log being fed to the machine from a support 40 adjustably mounted on the frame 19 and passing from the machine over a roller 41 also adjustably mounted on the frame. The steering knife 10 of the feeding device is carried by a rod 22 rotatably mounted in a member 1 which is connected by pivots 25, 26 to the ends of links 2, 15, the other ends of which are connected by pivots 27, 28 to a main beam 4 on the frame 19. A shaft 3 of adjustable length is also pivotally mounted at one end on the beam 4 and at its other end is connected by a linkage 5 to a sleeve 23 adjustably secured to a hand lever 13 secured to the steering knife 10 whereby the edge of the knife can be adjusted relative to the axis of the transporting device and cutting device to vary the rate of feed of a log. A toothed member 14 is mounted on a pivot 34 on the member 1 and is urged by a spring 35 towards the cutting device but is prevented from engaging the device by a stop 32. A further stop 31 prevents a spring 29 acting on the link 2 from engaging the toothed member 14 with the transporting device. In operation, a log from the support 40 is placed with one end on the transporting device 8 which moves the log towards the toothed member 14 and the cutting device. The rotation imparted to the log by the transporting device 8 lifts the toothed member 14 together with the member 1, knife 10 and a plate 12 attached to the member until the knife and plate are above the log, the toothed member then moving to the other side of the log to act, with the device 8, to press the log against the cutting device. The knife edge engages the log to cause it to move axially as it is rotated, the axial feed depending on the adjustment of the knife. The dimensions of the links 2, 15 are such that when the knife is raised by engagement of the log with the toothed member 14, the angle between the knife edge and axis of the device 8 is reduced to automatically reduce the rate of feed of the log.
