Abstract
An aqueous peracetic acid solution having a concentration of 0.5-7.0% by wt. of peracid, a pH of 5.4-7.0 and free from deleterious amounts of diacetyl peroxide, is prepared by continuously introducing into a tubular reaction zone, under an even, pulse-free pressure at a rate to produce turbulent flow designated by a Reynolds number of 5000-30,000 and a residence time of 30 seconds-5 mins., at 80-140 DEG F., the following reactants, (a) aqueous hydrogen peroxide in an amount to provide an active oxygen concentration of 0.8-12.0 vols, (b) acetic anhydride in an amount to provide an anhydride : hydrogen peroxide molar ratio of 1.0-1.16:1, and (c) a basic catalyst compatible with active oxygen in an amount to provide a pH in the reaction mixture of 5.4-7.0, and continuously withdrawing the peracetic acid solution from the reaction zone. The preferred catalyst is ammonium hydroxide The process is preferably effected in a water-cooled tubular reactor which is illustrated in drawings (not shown).
