Abstract

1,117,353. Screw-and-nut gearing. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 15 April, 1966 [30 April, 1965], No. 18275/65. Heading F2Q. In a recirculating ball type screw and nut device, the screw comprises a helical coil 1 of stainless steel or high carbon hard drawn spring steel wire around a bar or tube 2 of silver steel having a diameter slightly greater than the free internal diameter of the coil 1, a coil of stainless steel wire 3 being interposed between the turns of the coil 1 to maintain the latter at a predetermined pitch. The nut comprises a thread insert 4 of circular section wire held at the required pitch by radial inserts 5, 6 in the nut body 7 or by internal screw threads in the nut body. Alternatively the insert may be a coil of wire (11) of generally trapezoidal section (Figs. 2, 5, not shown). A return path for the balls 8 is provided either through the nut body 7 or by an external tube. In Figs 3-5 (not shown) a metal insert (14) in an axial slot in the coil (11) has vanes (15) which deflect the balls (8) in each turn of the coil (11) back to the start of their respective turns.
