Abstract

1,116,863. Steering vehicles. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. 29 June, 1965 [7 April, 1964], No. 14202/64. Heading B7H. A motor vehicle steering system is provided with power assistance in the lower speed ranges of the vehicle. In the steering linkage shown, an idler arm is connected to the shaft 10 of a vane type motor 2 to which pressure fluid may be fed from an engine-driven pump 14 through a solenoid operated control valve 18 which has two positions, one for supplying power fluid to the motor 2 and the other returning the fluid to reservoir and which is controlled by a movable switch member operated through a cable or mechanical linkage from the gear-box selector mechanism, or is spring biased directly against a component of that mechanism in such a way that the valve is operated in the lowest forward and reverse gear ratios. Alternatively, the valve may be controlled by a centrifugal governor responsive to the vehicle propeller shaft speed. The motor 2 may include a direction sensing valve 12 which, responsive to steering movements, directs the incoming fluid to the appropriate side of the motor vane. A restricted flow communication between opposite sides of the vane enables the motor 2 to function as a damper when not powered.
