Abstract

1,116,310. Surface connectors for printed circuit boards. AMP Inc. 15 Nov., 1966 [10 Dec., 1965], No. 51038/66. Heading H2E. [Also in Divisions E2 and F2] A socket for mounting in an aperture in a printed circuit board or other panel is made from sheet metal so as to have an entrance portion 16 of rectangular section with a seam along an upper surface and two jaws 22 extending rearwardly from the side surfaces and inclined towards one another with their end portions inclined more steeply. The end portions may be serrated as at 36 and the jaws may each have a lateral arm (40), Fig. 6 (not shown), folded behind the other jaw so as to limit the separation of the jaws. The socket may receive a post of rectangular section, Figs. 2 and 9 (not shown), having one or more notches in it for latching engagement by the end portions of the jaws. The post may be pushed out from a chassis and the socket may be soldered to a conductor on the latter to enable the chassis to be earthed. The post may be of square section with rounded corners so that it may be disengaged from the socket by partial rotation. In a further arrangement, Fig. 10 (not shown), the post is in the form of a screw, in which case the end portions of the jaws are arcuate and release may be effected by unscrewing. The socket has flanges 18 and may be retained in the panel 10 by resilient tongues 34 struck out of the jaws or by bent-up opposed flanges, Fig. 1 (not shown).
