Abstract

1,115,832. Gyroscope gimbals. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov. 23,1965 [Dec. 11, 1964]. No. 49762/65. Headings G1C and G1F. Gimbal rings for use in supporting a gyroscope or an inertial platform are constructed of four separate segments held together by screws and located with respect to each other by locating pins or recesses. Two of the segments, opposite each other, may carry bearing assemblies incorporating electric pick-off on torquer coils, and two or more of the segmented gimbals may be rested inside one another. The gimbal segments are preferably of aluminium, magnesium, or beryllium, and the bearing assembly housings of titanium, or non- magnetic stainless steel, on elastomeric plastics or rubber film being interposed between the housing and the gimbal segment to allow for differences in thermal expansion. The bearings may have a central aperture to allow the passage of flat tape electrical leads held in place by slots in end covers for the bearing.
