Abstract
Olefins are produced in the production of trialkyl aluminium compounds prepared by the steps (a) chain growth reaction of C2H4 and a low-alkyl trialkyl aluminium, (b) selective displacement of high alkyl groups from the product of (a) by a mixture of low olefins, and separating at least a part of the olefins from the product, (c) the recycling of at least a part of the intermediate trialkyl aluminium from (b) back to (a), or (d) the reaction of it with C2H4 in a separate chain growth, (e) displacement of the other part of the product of step (a) and/or the product of (d) with high olefins corresponding to the alkyl groups of the desired product and separation of the product and the olefins, (f) fractionation of the olefins from steps (b) and (e) into low and high olefin fractions for recycling to (b) and (e), and (g) selective displacement of a trialkyl aluminium with the olefins of at least one of the fractions of (f) and separation of the trialkyl aluminium compounds formed from the olefins which includes purging at least a part of the non-reacted olefins. The trialkyl aluminium compound of step (g) may be recycled to step (c) or (d). The chain growth reactions may take place at 200-350 DEG F. and 1000-3500 lb./sq. inch, and the displacement reactions at 450-650 DEG F. or as in Specification 1,028,066.ALSO:Trialkyl aluminium compounds, having controlled identity and proportions of alkyl groups, are prepared by the steps (a) chain growth reaction of C2H4 and a low-alkyl trialkyl aluminium, (b) selective displacement of high alkyl groups from the product of (a) by a mixture of low olefins, and separating at least a part of the olefins from the product, (c) the recycling of at least a part of the intermediate trialkyl aluminium from (b) back to (a), or (d) the reaction of it with C2H4 in a separate chain growth, (e) displacement of the other part of the product of step (a) and/or the product of (d) with high olefins corresponding to the alkyl groups of the desired product and separation of the product and the olefins, (f) fractionation of the olefins from steps (b) and (e) into low and high olefin fractions for recycling to (b) and (e), and (g) selective displacement of a trialkyl aluminium with the olefins of at least one of the fractions of (f) and separation of the trialkyl aluminium compounds formed from the olefins which includes purging at least a part of the nonreacted olefins. The trialkyl aluminium compound of step (g) may be recycled to step (c) or (d). The chain growth reactions may take place at 200-350 DEG F. and 1000-3500 lb./sq. inch, and the displacement reactions at 450-650 DEG F. or as in Specification 1,028,066. The product of step (e) may be reacted with an oxidizing gas to convert 50-70% of the alkyl groups to alkoxy groups.
