Abstract

1,114,447. Wrapping-machines. HAUNIWERKE KORBER & CO. KOMM. GES. 19 July, 1966 [19 July, 1965; 21 Dec., 1965], Nos. 30550/65 and 54050/65. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B5] Device in a packing machine for joining parts of a wrapper comprises feed means to supply and deliver packages and control means comprising a time-limiting member (162), (164), (166), (168), Fig. 5 (not shown), operated by a cyclic signal source 134, 136, Fig. 4, to operate heating means in step with the speed of the packaging machine. The heating means is preferably used to effect welding of the wrapper but may be used for drying adhesion points of wrappers sealed by adhesive. In a machine for wrapping cigarette packages 4 in a transparent film wrapper having a tear strip, the packages 4 are fed individually by drivers 46 on a conveyer (not shown) along a lower section 7 of a packing track 6 and pass between two coaxial suction feed wheels 42, 44 which have received a wrapper blank 40. Wrapper material passes from a reel 12 around stationary rollers 16, 18, 20 and a roller 24 displaceable against the action of a spring. A tear strip 28 from a reel 30 is welded to the wrapper material by an electrically heated strip 32 movable into the welding position by an electromagnet 34 and out of this position by springs 36. The wrapper material with the tear strip welded thereto is cut into blanks 40 by a cutter blade drum 38 whilst passing over a drum 26 to the wheels 42, 44. The leading narrow tucks of each wrapper are folded by folders 48, 50 provided in advance of the entry of the package into a duct 8. A vertically reciprocable plunger 52, folds the lower side flaps of each wrapper and stepwise lifts the packages 4. The side lap seam of the wrapper is folded by an inclined surface 54 on a wall 56 of the duct 8. The wall 56 is heated to effect sealing. A U-shaped plunger 58 feeds the package 4 along a section 9 to a duct 10 and co-operates with stationary folders 60, 62 to fold the trailing narrow tucks of the wrapper. A vertically reciprocable plunger 64 folds the lower flaps upwardly and conveys the package 4 upwardly through the duct 10 and final folding and sealing is effected by heating walls 66, 68, Fig. 2, of the duct 10. The walls 56, 66, 68, Fig. 2, are provided with electrical heating elements 70, 76, 82, respectively, and are reciprocable towards and away from the packages and only engage the packages to effect sealing for one period, i.e. while the packages are at rest, during each working cycle. This reciprocation is effected by a cam 88 connected through a shaft 90 to the main drive shaft of the machine and which has a roller 92, rotatably supported on a lever 94 held in contact therewith by a spring 96. A gear 100 is carried by a shaft 98 rigid with the lever 94 and engaged toothed racks 102, 104, 106 so that oscillation of the lever 94 by the cam 88 reciprocates the walls 56, 66, 68 through the linkages shown. Upon stoppage of the machine, the walls 56, 66, 68 are withdrawn with a greater movement to an out-of-use position by an electromagnet 130 operating on the lever 94. The control means comprises a lever 132, Fig. 4, carrying a permanent magnet 134 and which is secured to and thus rotatable with the shaft 90. The magnet 134 operates a sealed switch 136 mounted on a holder 142 and having a stationary contact 138 and a movable contact 140. The holder 142 is secured to a pivotably mounted lever 144 which is movable by an electromagnet 148 to a position in which the switch 136 lies in the path of the magnet 134 and is returnable to its normal position by a spring 150. If the speed of the wrapping machine is reduced below the normal working speed, a circuit for the electromagnet 34 is interrupted to withdraw the welding strip 32. Simultaneously, the electromagnet 130 is operated to withdraw the walls 66, 66, 68 and the electromagnet 148 is energized to move the magnet 134 to close the switch 136 and operate a motor (164), Fig. 5 (not shown), of a timing relay (162) to close contacts (166), (168) thereof. The circuit for the electromagnet 130 is energized so that it falls back to its inoperative position and releases the lever 94 so that the spring 96 urges the roller 92 into contact with the cam 88 and the walls 56, 66, 68 are moved into the welding position and reciprocated by the cam 88 at the reduced speed. When the time selected at the relay (162) has expired, i.e. the desired heating period of the elements 70, 76, 82, the motor (164) opens the relay contact (168) so that the circuit for the electromagnet 34 is interrupted to release the strip 32 and simultaneously the electromagnet 130 is energized to move the walls 56, 66, 68 to the out-of-use position so that the welding operation is again interrupted. The motor (164) of the timing relay (162) reverts to its starting position so that the control means are ready for the next operation. Electric circuit diagrams for the operation of the machine are described, Figs. 5-9 (all not shown).
