Abstract

[Also in Divisions F2 and G3] A machine having a power train for moving a workpiece, and a head that can traverse the workpiece, includes programming means operated by said power train for controlling the traverse of the head, there being provision for a dwell period of the head. In Fig. 1 the disc 25 rotates with the mandrel 12. The disc 25 has a large number of holes 31 on a first circle and a lesser number of holes 33 on a second circle. Each circle of holes is scanned by separate light activated switches 106, 116 responsive to light beams passing through said holes. On each actuation of the switch 106, associated with the holes 31, a motor 23 is pulsed by an increment to cause a belt 26 to move a filament winder head 18 by an increment along the mandrel 12. The number of holes 31 and the pulsing of the motor 23 can then be selected to give the desired helix angle of the winding. Whilst the head 18 traverses between limit switches 27R and 27F the light-sensitive switch 116 is not active. When one of the limit switches 27R, 27F is actuated, the light-sensitive switch 116 is rendered operative. When a first hole 33 passes the switch 116, a pulse is generated that renders the light-sensitive switch 106 inoperative and the mandrel 12 thus rotates for a period whilst the winder head 18 remains stationary. When the next hole 33 passes the switch 116, the light-sensitve switch 106 is again rendered responsive to the passage of the holes 31 and the winder head 18 re-commences its incremental movement but this time in the opposite direction of traverse. The dwell period created by the holes 33, at each end of the traverse, ensures that each successive end of filament that is wound lays adjacent to, or is disposed in a predetermined pattern with respect to, the preceding winding. The electrical control circuits are described.
