Abstract
1,113,461. Gear pumps and motors. SHIMADZU SEISAKUSHO Ltd. June 18, 1965 [July 31, 1964 (2)], No.25928/65. Heading F1F. A gear pump (or motor) comprising a casing 23, Fig. 1, having a cylindrical centre portion 24 and end closures 25, 26 within which on a drive shaft 31 and driven shaft 35 meshing gears 21 and 22 respectively are mounted, includes in abutment with the opposite side faces of the gears, thrust plates 44, 45 and around the gear peripheries adjacent the meshing area along the addendum circles thereof, sealing members 52, 53, Fig. 3, formed separate from the casing. The thrust plates 44, 45 are recessed both on their faces adjacent the end closures and on their faces adjacent the gears, the areas of these recesses being dimensioned so that the plates are in axial balance from the hydraulic pressure force to which they are subjected. The end closure 25 is formed with an inlet passage 60, Fig. 4, and outlet passage 61 connected with axially directed flow passages 62, 68 respectively and passage spaces 66, 67, 73, 72 so that hydraulic fluid is introduced into and leaves the gear teeth in an axial direction to ensure complete filling of the teeth at the inlet side of the pump. Leaf-springs 58, 59 urge the sealing members 52, 53 into sealing contact with the gears. The spring 58 associated with the inlet sealing member 52 is relatively weak and the spring 59 associated with the outlet sealing member 53 relatively strong, since pressure in the inlet passage 60 is less than that in the outlet passage 61. In a modification, the springs 58, 59 are omitted. In this case the outer peripheries of the sealing members 52, 53 are arcuate and closely adjacent the inner cylindrical surface of the casing 23. The bearings 40, 41 supporting the driven shaft 35 in this case are unsupported by the end closures 25, 26, which in operation of the pump allows slight swing of the gears and thrust plates on the drive shaft and one or other of the sealing members 52, or 53 to engage the inner periphery of the casing 23.
