Abstract
Foamed polystyrene sheets with oriented cell structure are produced by compressing by at least 50% of the initial thickness a foamed polystyrene sheet, while it is in a heat-plasticized condition and with both sides sealed, and then allowing the foamed sheet to expand, thus forming a foamed layer with cell walls which are predominantly directed normal to the sheet and increasing the resistance thereof to compression. The sides of the sheet can be sealed by a covering layer, e.g. paper, fabric webs, metal foil, thermoplastic films, rubber sheets or layers of resin, which may be applied simultaneously with the compression operation and which may remain permanently on the foamed sheet. The sheet may be heated to a plasticized condition during the compression operation, e.g. by providing the compression elements with heating means. Said compression elements may comprise pressure rolls, the diameter of the end portions of which are either smaller than the central portion so that the edges of the sheet are less compressed and thus retain their closed cell structure and serve as a lateral sealing of the sheet, or larger than the central portion so that the edges of the sheet are more compressed so as to form a thin compact layer, again laterally sealing the sheet.
