Abstract
In the manufacture of highly polymeric polyesters by reacting a glycol with an aromatic dicarboxylic or an ester-forming derivative thereof and then polycondensing the resulting glycol dicarboxylate, a praseodymium compound is used as a catalyst, at least in the polycondensation stage. Specified praseodymium compounds are the oxides, halides, nitrate, sulphate, acetate, citrate, phthalate, tartrate, oxalate lactate, sorbate, acetylacetonate, benzoylacetonate, glycolate, oxinate and oxychloride and complex compounds e.g. praseodymium dibenzoylmethane. Specified dicarboxylic acids are terephthalic and pyridinedicarboxylates whilst specified glycols are ethylene glycol and the cyclohexanedimethanols. Examples describe the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate by reacting dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol.
