Abstract

1,113,064. Self-tapping screws. RESEARCH ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING Inc. 11 Aug., 1965 [12 May, 1964], No. 19805/64. Addition to 957,675. Heading B3N. A fluteless, self-tapping, headless screw in the form of a stud 10 has a rolled thread 15, Figs. 1 and 2, the cross-section of which is approximately an equilateral triangle having arcuate sides 17 struck from points 18, the ends 14 of the stud being tapered. The distance of points 18 from the axis may be constant along the length of the stud, or the distance may be progressively reduced along the tapered portions 14 to thus vary the extent of projections 16. The stud may have a gimlet point at each. end, or blunt ends. In a modification, Figs. 7, 11 (not shown), work end (39) is tapered for only a single thread turn, and tapered work end (40) has a root (41) which progressively increases in diameter towards the end (42). In a further modification, Figs. 8, 12 (not shown), the tapered ends (46), (47) are separated by an unthreaded portion (52) which may have the same cross-sectional shape as the ends, or may be circular. In a still further modification, Figs. 9, 13, 15 (not shown), stud (55) has a non- circular tapered self-tapping end (57), and a circular end (59). In another modification, Figs. 10, 14 (not shown), the thread is of constant root diameter, and the ends 64, 65 are tapered for only one thread turn. In yet another modification, the screw (70), Figs. 16, 17 (not shown), is also formed with an internal screw thread of circular cross-section.
