Abstract

A composition comprises a mixture of diperisophthalic acid and a hydrated inorganic salt which retains water of hydration at temperatures below 60 DEG C. but loses at least a portion of the water of hydration at a temperature from 60 DEG to 150 DEG C. The hydrated inorganic salt may have a water of crystallization which is released at a temperature between 30 DEG and 60 DEG C. in addition to water of crystallization which is lost at a temperature from 60 DEG to 150 DEG C. Salts specified include hydrated magnesium sulphate and nitrate and hydrates of aluminium sulphate, sodium, potassium and ammonium-aluminium sulphates and neutral or acidic hydrates of alkali metal polyphosphates. Preferably free flowing powders are obtained by adding to the diperacid in the form of a water-wet filter cake a hydratable salt containing less than its normal water of hydration in such proportion that the salt takes up the water in the filter cake to form a hydrate.ALSO:Bleaching agents for textiles comprise a mixture of diperisophthalic acid and a hydrated inorganic salt which retains water of hydration at temperatures below 60 DEG C but loses at least a portion of the water of hydration at a temperature from 60 DEG C to 150 DEG C. The hydrated inorganic salt may have a water of crystallisation which is released at a temperature between 30 and 60 DEG C in addition to water of crystallisation which is lost at a temperature from 60 DEG to 150 DEG C. Salts specified include hydrated magnesium sulphate and nitrate and hydrates of aluminium sulphate sodium, potassium and ammonium-aluminium sulphates and neutral or acidic hydrates of alkali metal polyphosphates. Additional ammonium salts such as ammonium sulphate or acetate may be included to reduce the amount of hydrate inorganic salt required in the compositions. Where it is desired to compound the per acid with detergents or strongly alkaline materials either component may be coated or encapsulated with a suitable material of which many are specified.
