Abstract
1,112,557. Hydraulic couplings. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. (Eaton Manufacturing Co.). 4 Aug., 1965, No. 33314/65. Heading F2C. A viscous coupling for driving a vehicle cooling fan has a working chamber 40 supplied with fluid from a reservoir 58 under the control of a bimetallic temperature-responsive coil, and has build-up of fluid in the shear space 56 formed between interdigitating projections 57 on an input rotor 11 and an output casing 12 delayed by notches 70 or slots formed in the cylindrical periphery of the rotor. The notches or slots serve to pump fluid from the shear space 56 to the opposite side of the rotor, whence it flows to the reservoir through ports 63 which are associated with pumping elements 66 fast with the casing 12. As shown, notches 70 are provided which get progressively narrower and shallower in the axial direction of the shear space and which are angled to assist the pumping action. As an alternative slots (Figs. 6-8, not shown) of uniform depth throughout the entire width of the rotor may be provided, the slots being suitably shaped and angled to promote pumping. The delay in build-up of fluid in the shear space retards acceleration of the output casing upon acceleration of the input rotor and thus causes fan noise, caused by acceleration of the fan, to lag behind, and thus be masked by, the engine noise. Cooling fins may be provided on the casing.
