Abstract

A TiO2 pigment which has been surface coated with an Al carboxylate or modified carboxylate containing sulphonate, phosphate, alkanolamine, or amide groups, is incorporated into a soya alkyd resin paint (Example 12) or into a composition containing a coconut fatty acid alkyd, a castor oil alkyd, and a triazine resin (Example 3).ALSO:Pigment particles are coated with: (1) an Al tricarboxylate in which each carboxylate radical has at least 12 carbon atoms; (2) a polymeric oxy-Al carboxylate having the repeating unit <FORM:1112362/C4-C5/1> in which R has at least 8 carbon atoms, prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid with water and an Al alkoxide, or (3) a modified polymeric oxy-Al carboxylate, prepared as type (2) but in which a portion of the carboxylic acid is replaced by a sulphonic acid, organic phosphate, alkanolamine, or acid amide. The coating may be partially hydrolysed on the surface. Examples of type (1) are laurate, myristate, palmitate, stearate, oleate, linoleate, sorbate, linoleate, and oleate-linoleate. Examples of type (2) are stearate and octoate. Examples of type (3) replacing groups are ethylhexyl phosphate, ethane sulphonate, stearic acid amide, dodecyl benzene sulphonate, and ethanolamine. Coating may be effected by contacting the pigment with an organic solution of the Al compound and evaporating the solvent, with mechanical agitation during or after contacting (various solvents and mills are listed), or by direct treatment e.g. of suspensions or pulps. The amount of Al compound may be 0.1-6% by weight of the pigment. Exemplified pigments are TiO2, g -Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. Also referred to are carbon, chrome yellows and greens, Prussian blue, ultramarine, Zn and Pb chromates, pure and litho Cd reds and yellows, paratoluidine, lithol, indathrene reds and maroons, benzidene and hansa yellows, phthalocyanine greens and blues, Fe oxide reds, maroons, yellows, browns and blacks, oxides and hydroxides of Cr, Ni, Cu, Mn, and Co, ZnS, ZnO, PbCO3, PbSO4, Sb oxides, BaSO4, CaCO3 clay, mica, SiO2, Al2O3, Mg and Ca silicates. In Example 5, treated Fe3O4 or g -Fe2O3 is incorporated into a lithographic ink containing soya bean lecithin and oxidized linseed oil.ALSO:Pigment particles are coated with: (1) an Al tricarboxylate in which each carboxylate radical has at least 12 carbon atoms, (2) a polymeric oxy-Al carboxylate having the repeating unit <FORM:1112362/C1/1> in which R has at least 8 carbon atoms, prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid with water and an Al alkoxide, or (3) a modified polymeric oxy-Al carboxylate, prepared as type (2) but in which a portion of the carboxylic acid is replaced by a sulphonic acid, organic phosphate, alkanolamine, or acid amide. The coating may be partially hydrolysed on the surface. Examples of type (1) are laurate. myristate, palmitate, stearate, oleate, linoleate, sorbate, linoleate, and oleate-linoleate. Examples of type (2) are stearate and octoate. Examples of type (3) replacing groups are ethylhexyl phosphate, ethane sulphonate, stearic acid amide, dodecyl benzene sulphonate, and ethanolamine. Coating may be effected by contacting the pigment with an organic solution of the Al compound and evaporating the solvent, with mechanical agitation during or after contacting (various solvents and mills are listed), or by direct treatment, e.g. of suspensions or pulps. The amount of Al compound may be 0.1-6% by weight of the pigment. Exemplified pigments are TiO2, g -Fe2O3, and Fe3O4. Also referred to are carbon, chrome yellows and greens, Prussian blue, ultramarine, Zn and Pb chromates, pure and litho Cd reds and yellows, paratoluidine, lithol, indanthrene reds and maroons, benzidene and hansa yellows, phthalocyanine greens and blues, Fe oxide reds, maroons, yellow, browns and blacks, oxides and hydroxides of Cr, Ni, Cu, Mn, and Co, ZnS, ZnO, PbCO3, PbSO4, Sb oxides, BaSO4, CaCO3, clay, mica, SiO2, Al2O3, Mg and Ca silicates.ALSO:The following modified oxy-aluminium carboxylates are prepared: Oxy-Al distearate mono-ethylhexyl phosphate and monostearate di-ethylhexyl phosphate, from Al isopropoxide, stearic acid, ethylhexyl phosphate and water (Examples 6 and 7]. Oxy-Al distearate mono-ethane sulphonate from Al isopropoxide, stearic acid, ethane sulphonic acid and water (Example 9). Oxy-Al distearate mono-ethanolaminate and mono-stearate di-ethanolaminate, and Oxy-Al di-stearate, mono-stearic acid amide, from Al isopropoxide, stearic acid, water, and ethanolamine or stearic acid amide. [Examples 8, 10 and 11].ALSO:A TiO2 pigment which has been surface coated with an Al carboxylate or modified carboxylate containing sulphonate, phosphate, alkanolamine, or amide groups, is incorporated into a soya alkyd resin paint (Ex 12) or into a composition containing a coconut fatty acid alkyd, a castor oil alkyd, and a triazine resin (Ex 3), and applied, e.g. by spraying, onto steel panels, and baked at 300-350 DEG F.
